The Amarillo City council has approved an agreement between Western Builders of Amarillo and Hunt Construction Group. With that approval, work can now begin on the new downtown Multi-Purpose Event Venue (MPEV) baseball stadium.

Agreement on a contractor was the last step we needed to be cleared for the construction to begin. It's really great to see a local company such as Western Builders on this project!

Representatives from the city and both contractors hope to break ground by the end of this month or beginning of February.  Once construction begins, the contractors have an agreement to have the facility completed within 14 months.

For each week past the deadline, there is a $24,000 penalty. The city is hoping to see the project completed in just 12 months.

Amarillo Mayor Ginger Nelson said the new ballpark will be open by April 1, 2019, in time for the new Amarillo baseball team to take the field. The double-A San Antonio "Missions" will move to Amarillo for the 2019 season.

No official word yet on when the naming of the new team will take place, but as soon as we hear something, we will be sure to let you know.
