Even Turkey’s Have Thanksgiving Traditions – Presidents Annual Turkey Pardon

While it may be tradition for us humans to eat turkey on Thanksgiving each year, it is also a tradition for one lucky turkey to be pardoned from becoming said dinner. The annual Presidential pardon has been happening for decades at the White House and this year was no different.

President Barack Obama, without waiting for congressional approval he said, pardoned two turkeys in a decades-long ceremony marking the start of Thanksgiving in the U.S.

The two turkeys, named Liberty and Peace, were pardoned Nov. 23 in the White House’s Rose Garden. The birds were raised by four high school students on a farm in Minnesota and sent to live in Mt. Vernon after the pardoning ceremony.

Obama said the students trained the turkeys to face the White House press corps by exposing them to loud noises and flash bulbs.

“They also received the most important part of their media training, which involved learning how to gobble without really saying anything,” he said.

President Bush was the first to officially pardon the bird in 1989, but many before him have found a soft spot in their hearts for the tasty turkeys. President Kennedy sent his to live in a petting zoo and President Lincoln argued that his turkey had the same rights to live as anyone else. PETA would have loved that guy lol.
