Construction work continues all across the I-40 stretch through Amarillo and it is about to really start impacting your drive through town.

Recently, The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) started bridge construction work at I-40 and Bell Street. They have just announced that starting on Friday, July 28th at 7pm, they will begin demolishing the Bell Street bridges. Bell Street will be closed until the project is complete which is slated for late November. During this time, northbound Bell Street travelers are encouraged to detour east to Olsen Boulevard while southbound Bell Street motorists should detour west to Coulter Street.

On that same Friday that Bell closes, I-40 will be shut down for the weekend while the eastbound turnaround bridge is demolished. I-40 should reopen by 6am on Monday, July 30th. Another I-40 closure will take place the following weekend (7 p.m. Friday, August 4th through 6 a.m. Monday, August 7th) as the main bridge is taken down.

Interstate traffic will be detoured to the frontage roads. Officers will be on site during the demolition and motorists are encouraged to seek alternate routes.

Please remember to slow down, pay attention in construction zones and be aware of the safety of construction workers. The Texas Department of Transportation appreciates your patience as crews work on these improvements.
