I came across this letter this morning and it just made my heart cry.  It is so hateful and demeaning to a family with a special needs child.  This letter isn't from Amarillo, but for those families with special needs children it hurts to the core.  People can be so hateful.

Chances are you live in a neighborhood, apartment complex, townhouse, etc. where a family has a special needs child.  You, as a neighbor, can handle it gracefully or you can be outright hateful and rude about it like this person's neighbor.

The picture isn't really clear. The letter is transcribed below.

The letter reads:

To the Lady Living at This Address,

I also live in this neighborhood and have a problem!!!  You have a kid that is mentally handicapped and you consciously decided that it would be a good idea to live in a close proximity neighborhood like this????  You selfishly put your kid outside everyday and let him be a nothing but a nuisance and a problem to everyone else with that noise polluting whaling he constantly makes!!!  That noise he makes when he is outside is DREADFUL!!!!!!!!! It scares the hell out of my normal children!!!!!!!  When you feel you idiot kid needs fresh air, take him to our park you dope!!!  We have a nature trail!!  Let him run around those places and make noise!!!!!! Crying babies, music and even barking dogs are normal sounds in a residential neighborhood!!!!! He is NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He is a hindrance to everyone and will always be that way!!!!!  Who the hell is going to care for him?????? No employer will hire him, no normal girl is going to marry/love him and you are not going to live forever!!  Personally, they should take whatever non retarded body parts he possesses and donate it to science.  What the hell else good is he to anyone!!!  You had a retarded kid, deal with it...properly!!!!!  What right do you have to do this to hard working people!!!!!!! I HATE people like you who believe, just because you have a special needs kid, you are entitled to special treatment!!! GOD!!!!!!

Do everyone in our community a huge favor and MOVE!!!! VAMOSE!!! SCRAM!!!! Move away and get out of this type of neighborhood setting!!!  Gov live in a trailer in the woods or something with your wild animal kid!!!  Nobody wants you living here and they don't have the guts to tell you!!!!!

Do the right thing and move or euthanize him!!! Either way we are ALL better off!!!

Sincerely,

One pissed off mother!!!!!

"One pissed off mother?" Really?  How about the mother that had to read this hate filled letter.  The hurt and the pain it must have caused.  I have several people in my life with special needs kids. Kids with Autism, Down Syndrome, mental retardation and none of those children are dreadful or a nuisance. They are wonderful, awesome, people full of unconditional love.  This hateful woman could learn a lot from the person she is condemning in this letter.

Maybe this special needs child makes a lot of noise, maybe he wails and screams, but guess what, this is probably a child where the wailing and screams is the only way he can communicate.

Yes, he may scare your "normal" children.  Here's an idea, instead of condemning this child and spewing hate, why don't you walk over to this home, and learn something about this child.

Go talk to the mother, let her explain why her child does the things he does.  I can guarantee you this mother already knows that her child will not lead a normal life, her child might not ever find a partner and marry.  Do you not realize this mother knows this and has already grieved for what her child won't ever have?  However, I guarantee you this mother knows the things her child will have and what this child will contribute to this world.

Yes, this child will have a future, and yes there are many employers in this world that have the grace and patience and realize that these kids and adults matter and make a business work better.

How dare you call this child a wild animal. This child is a gift from God and it's my guess was sent to this Earth to teach people like you tolerance.

"Do the right thing and euthanize him?" Dear madam, what if someone asked you to euthanize your child for being a spoiled brat?  Would you be hopping mad?  I'm sure you would.

This woman has every right to let her child have fresh air, it is her property.  Have you considered that your children screaming and laughing and having fun outside might scare her child.  It might cause anxiousness in her child, should you move out of the neighborhood because of this?  I think not.

Open up your browser and do some research.  Instead of spewing hate, you need to start spreading love.  I can guarantee you that this mother is more hardworking than any normal parent ever thought about being.  So next time before you decided to spew hate take a few minutes and put yourself in this mother's shoes.  I can almost bet that if you were the parent that was blessed with a special needs child you would not be this way.  You would understand the struggle.

So, next time you decided to anonymously send a nasty hateful letter to someone, think twice, knock on their door, and talk to your neighbor, get to know this special needs child, maybe offer help to this mother. You would be surprised how you and your children could be blessed by this special needs family.

It's called tolerance and it is time for you to learn about it.
