As part of a tribute to the iconic Texas songwriter Adam Carroll, Jamie Lin Wilson of the Trishas recorded Carroll's "Hi-Fi Love," and she's premiering her cover of the song exclusively for readers of The Boot.

Country fans might not recognize Carroll's name, but they've likely heard one of his tracks -- perhaps "Take Me Away," which appears on the soundtrack for the movie Country Strong. In Texas, though, Carroll has developed a reputation that's earned him comparisons to legends such as John Prine and Townes Van Zandt, and like plenty of Texas musicians, Wilson has found inspiration in Carroll’s evocative songwriting and unique voice.

“Adam has a very distinct way of writing," she tells The Boot. "It’s smart, literate, funny and clever.

"In every recording of "Hi-Fi Love" I listened to, the rhythm is weird, and the guitar playing is not the same as the words, but I didn’t notice that until I tried to learn it,” Wilson explains. “When I listen to him, it all flows. Then I tried to learn it, and I was like, ‘What is he doing?’

"His chord structures are so cool and mysterious," she adds. "It was a challenge, but I’m glad that I accepted it and did it. I think it made me better.”

Wilson’s cover of “Hi-Fi Love” appears on Highway Prayer: A Tribute to Adam Carroll. In addition to Wilson, the album features appearances from some of Texas’ most iconic songwriters and performers, including Hayes Carll, Jason Eady and James McMurtry.

“Adam's influenced all his songwriter friends. Everyone has a song they wrote after listening to an Adam Carroll song, one where they go, ‘That’s my Adam Carroll song,'" Wilson admits, noting that her "Adam Carroll song" is her tune "Oh Alice." "He’s kinda like the Mitch Hedberg of the folk scene. All comedians at some point do a Mitch Hedberg move, and all of us at some point in our shows do an Adam Carroll move.”

Highway Prayer: A Tribute to Adam Carroll is set for release on Austin’s Eight 30 Records on Oct. 28. It is available for pre-order via the record company's website.
