Kristian Bush, ‘Trailer Hitch’ – ToC Critic’s Pick [Listen]
Kristian Bush’s solo debut is as funky and upbeat as you’d expect it to be. The male half of Sugarland is always smiling. His first crack at solo success is no less of a ray of sunshine than any of his duo’s most contagious cuts.
However, he separates himself as an artist. That’s pretty easy to do, actually — few have ever heard him sing, so when ‘Trailer Hitch’ plays on the radio, no one is going to connect the dots.
“I don’t know why, know why / Everybody wanna die rich / Diamonds, champagne, work your way down that list,” Bush sings at the chorus. “We try, everybody tries, tries to fit it into that ditch / You can’t take it with you when you go / I’ve never seen a hearse with a trailer hitch / Never seen a hearse with a trailer hitch.”
Lyrically, the song’s message is easy to embrace. It’s good medicine after a long day or week at work or home. Dr. Bush’s best remedy, however, is the reggae-like guitar lick that drives the song. Along with an organ and simple drum beat, the track pulls together like a flash mob.
“Started away giving away all of my baseball cards / It felt so good by the afternoon I gave some guy my car,” he adds, before this poignant reminder: “The less I have to worry about the more time I got for smiling.”
Bush’s voice sounds good on country radio. He brings a unique style and sound, and with ‘Trailer Hitch,’ he carries an important reminder. Songs that slow us down to smile are important between the heartbreak and hell-raising tracks that tend to rule the airwaves.
Why Fans Will Love It: It makes you feel good. ‘Trailer Hitch’ uses a funky guitar riff and clever lyrics to deliver an important message.
Key Lyrics: “You can’t take it with you when you go / I’ve never seen a hearse with a trailer hitch”
Did You Know?: Bush took $300 out of a Chicago ATM before filming his lyric video for ‘Trailer Hitch.’ Then, he gave it away. Watch it happen below.
