In 2010, Taylor Swift released "Mine" as the lead single from her third studio album, Speak Now. Produced by Nathan Chapman and Swift, the song debuted at No. 1 on Billboard's Hot Digital Songs chart and at No. 3 on the Hot 100, making Swift the second female artist in the latter chart's history to have multiple songs debut in the Top 5 during one calendar year. "Mine" has been certified triple platinum and earned Swift a BMI Pop Award and a BMI Country Award.

In a webchat around the time of the release of "Mine," Swift shared the personal story behind the song.

It's a song that is about my tendency to run from love. It's sort of a recent tendency. For me, every really direct example of love I have had in front of me has ended in goodbye and has ended in breakups. So I think I've developed this pattern of running away when it is time to fall in love and stay in a relationship.

This song is about finding the exception to that and finding someone who would make you believe in love and realize that it could work out. I'm never, ever going to go past hoping that love can work out. I'm always going to be very hopeful and blindly optimistic when it comes to love, even if it does seem like it's very hard.
