Officials in Humphreys County, Tenn., say they can't explain why the life jacket Craig Morgan's son was wearing during his tragic tubing accident did not save his life.

Nineteen-year-old Jerry Greer died on Sunday (July 10) after coming out of an inner tube that was being pulled by a boat on Kentucky Lake in Humphreys County, just up the road from the small town of Dickson where Morgan and his family reside. His body was recovered from the water on Monday (July 11), and authorities have confirmed that he was wearing a life jacket at the time of the accident.

"We are not sure yet why he did not resurface, although the jacket he was wearing was not Coast Guard approved," a representative for the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency tells People. "He was legal because of what he was doing and the operator had proper life jackets on board, but the jacket itself was one that many skiers and wave board users wear. As an agency, we prefer jackets that have the Coast Guard approval."

"This was just a tragic accident as far as hitting a wave and coming off [the tube] and not coming up," says Humphreys County Sherrif Sheriff Chris Davis, who led the recovery efforts.

Funeral plans have not been announced for Greer, who graduated from Dickson High School in 2016 and was set to pay football at Marshall University. Greer is survived by his parents, Craig Morgan and Karen Greer, sister Aly Beaird and brother-in-law Ryan Beaird, brother Kyle Greer and fiancée Chelsea Rogers and brother Wyatt Greer.
