We have been blessed with an abundance of rain this summer, and who knew it could help the police catch a suspect with a felony theft warrant?

APD officers had responded to a hit and run accident on the 4500 block of Hardin in Amarillo. The officers put out flares to control traffic around the accident when a gray 2009 Lexus almost drove over the flares toward the scene.

Officers recognized the man in the vehicle as John Andree Maxwell, 46, of Amarillo. Maxwell had a felony theft warrant our of Dallas County and drove away from officers earlier this week in an attempt to pull his vehicle over.

When officers approached the vehicle Maxwell turned around and sped away toward a dead end. He jumped a curb into a nearby lot and blew out his vehicle tire, with officers chasing by foot he then crossed 45th St. and struck a stop sign.

The car finally came to a stop when the Maxwell drove into a lot full of mud and the car became stuck. Officers were able to detain the suspect after the taser guns were used.

Maxwell was booked into Randall Country Jail on a felony theft warrant our of Dallas County, and charges of evading arrest or detention and evading arrest or detention using a motor vehicle.

Who knew the rain could help the police capture a criminal?
