A Lubbock man was arrested Wednesday (April 30) for animal cruelty after he reportedly slammed a kitten onto the ground, leaving it so injured that local animal services had to euthanize it.

According to KAMC, the incident began when Robert Earl Smith, 21, was arguing about sleeping with someone's girlfriend to an unnamed individual at the Hill Top Apartments. At some point, Smith reportedly grabbed Lady, his girlfriend's 3-month-old kitten, and said "You don't need this cat."

Smith proceeded to slam the cat onto the road with such force that, according to the police report, there was an audible snap when it hit the ground.

The cat was euthanized due to the severity of its injuries.

According to the police report, Smith knew he was going to injure or kill the cat at the time of the crime. He was later found in a restroom stall in Patterson Library, and is presently being held in lieu of a $10,000 bond.
