Over the weekend news surfaced that an "old familiar face" was coming back around this Halloween. An asteroid that resembles a skull was supposedly going to pass close to Earth on Halloween night, like some kind of Grim Reaper version of Santa Clause.

I was really excited at the idea of getting to watch this Skeletor inspired space oddity fly through the night sky on the spookiest night of the year.

Unfortunately, the bright scientific minds at NASA have decided to rain on our collective parades. The asteroid will be passing by, but not close enough to see.

Several years ago the asteroid was discovered and made headlines for its unique skull shape. At that time it passed by at around 300,000 miles from Earth. This year it will be 25 million miles away.

To put it plainly, that's too far away for you to see. According to one NASA scientist, it will just be a bright dot in the sky.

Don't bother breaking out your telescope.

It will be closest to Earth around mid-November, but skulls and Thanksgiving just don't go together quite as well.
