Michael's friend's cannot say how exactly they got separated except after going to a few different bars they all split up and went separate ways after meeting other friends.  The last time anybody heard from Michael was a friend who recieved a call from him around 2am. Although officials say they were called after one business owner reported hearing somebody screaming for help by the Fox River nearby.

When the friends of Michael found out he had not made it home or anybody had heard from him that is what prompted them to call officials and report him missing.
