Former West Texas State stand-out and NBA Champion Maurice Cheeks was named the new head coach for the Detroit Pistons on Wednesday.

Cheeks played four years at West Texas State before being drafted in the second round of the NBA draft by the Philadelphia 76ers.

Cheeks played 15 years in the NBA as a point guard. He played for the Philadelphia 76ers, San Antonio Spurs, New York Knicks, Atlanta Hawks and the New Jersey Nets. He won an NBA Championship with the 76ers in 1983 and is the third leading scorer for West Texas State/WTAMU.
