According to an ancient Irish tradition, women can propose to men on Leap Day.

Leap Day only comes around every four years, so it's a pretty special occasion. The Irish decided that "this one is for the ladies" and created a tradition for the strange extra day.

According to legend, St. Brigid of Kildare asked Saint Patrick to grant women permission to propose marriage to any man of their choosing, sometime in the fifth century. Scotland also picked up this tradition, supposedly when unmarried Queen Margaret enacted it as a law.

Of course, with each of these traditions, the men were allowed to say no, as long as they gave the woman a nice skirt or dress to soften the blow.

In America, we do this thing called "Sadie Hawkins Day" where girls ask boys to a dance, which is just a little less of a commitment.

If you want to see the Leap Day tradition in action, watch the movie 'Leap Year' with Amy Adams. It didn't get very good reviews, but it's a modern take on the ancient concept.

Women across Europe and the U.S. actually take advantage of the opportunity to propose to their significant others. In 2012, the previous Leap Year, the Rachel Ray Show did a special episode where a woman proposed to her boyfriend on television. (And he did say yes.)

So guys, this could be a special day for you. Or it might be a wake-up call that your lady is ready to get married.
