This Long Standing Building in Canyon, Texas Was Torn Down
It's the end of an era for this long-standing building in Canyon.
Back in March, we shared with you that the property on the corner of 15th and Hwy 60 in Canyon had been sold. The property was purchased by the Canyon Economic Development Corporation. The property included the El Patio restaurant building and the home that houses Stewart title company.
At the time the CEDC couldn't offer up any more information about what the plans were for the property.
Today marks the end of the El Patio building.
Canyon Reader and Canyon resident James Haynes sent us the video of the building being torn down. He said that they have three trucks running non-stop hauling off the debris.
What is the future of this land?
We reached out to Stephanie Tucker, CEDC Executive Director,
The Canyon EDC board had identified a couple of locations that were kind of a gateway to the downtown Canyon business district and when this property came available to purchase they went ahead and purchased it because they wanted to protect it and make sure that they had a say in what might go there. So that's why it was purchased, especially because it's right there about Tex Randall which is owned by Main Street. At this point, we're cleaning it up for someone to maybe dream about having their own personal business there. The plan for right now is just cleaning it up.
We had originally heard it was going to be overflow parking for events such as the Canyon Independence Day Celebrations, the Canyon Chamber Chow Down, and other events like the Farmer's Market. Stephanie said that for now it could be used for parking, especially for those visiting Tex Randall.
What's going to happen to the historic home that houses Stewart Title which was included in the purchase?
"We do not foresee that house ever being torn down. It might be moved or relocated, but at this point, it will not be torn down."
As the building goes down, the future of Canyon is growing. If you have a business that you would like to be at the gateway of downtown Canyon, then your best bet is to reach out to the Canyon EDC for this prime property next to Tex Randall.
Right now Canyon is booming with new business, including a new Whataburger that is being built across from WTAMU, and another location of Pondeseta Brewing that will be moving into the Canyon Santa Fe Depot. Plus, another big addition to Canyon that we hope to be able to tell you about soon.
