Know These Rules Before Putting Up a Real Christmas Tree in Texas

This week, we'll gather around the family table in Texas, or elsewhere, to celebrate Thanksgiving. We'll stuff ourselves to point of having to loosen our belt, we'll fall asleep on the couch trying to watch the Dallas Cowboys game and some will get the Christmas tree out of storage to decorate with the family. Some are not fans of the artificial tress, though, and will want to visit a Christmas tree farm to pick out that perfect fir. For those that want the real tree, there are some rules that need to be followed.

The Rules For Putting Up a Real Christmas Tree

Every year, there is a discussion as to whether a real or fake Christmas tree should be the place to put the gifts under. The biggest concern is a fire. The danger is there if the right precautions are not taken. According to National Fire Protection Association, between 2016 and 2020, there was an average of 160 Christmas tree fires reported each of those years. To best prevent the possibility of a fire in your home, follow these rules:

• Look for a tree with vibrant, green needles. Be sure the tree has been freshly cut. Take an extra inch off the bottom to allow for water absorption.
• Give your tree water every day. If it dries out, it'll be easier for it to catch on fire.
• Use only approved lights to decorate the tree.
• Keep the tree away from heat sources like fire places and candles.
• Keep your pets away from the tree.
• Turn the lights off every night or unplug the lights from the outlet when not in use.
• Make sure your smoke alarms have been tested.

For Those That May Be Allergic

Another concern with real trees is those that might be allergic. You can't completely eliminate the allergens but there are ways to reduce them.

• Make sure the tree is free of insects or pests.
• Shake any debris off of the tree before bringing it inside.
• Rinse off the tree with a hose and sprayer and leave in a warm place to dry.

Keep in mind that even a well watered tree will only last about 4 weeks. For instance, if you set the tree up on Thanksgiving, it will need to be taken down a couple days after Christmas. Whether you have a real or fake tree, have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
