The Texas panhandle is littered with ghost towns, and sites that dredge up memories of what was. For some, you can thank the railroad. Others fell victim to highways. Still, there are those that found their demise at the hands of the oilfield.

Here's an interesting story of a Texas town that, honestly, seems to have disappeared.

Gewhitt, Texas. Don't Even Bother Searching Google For It.

It's difficult to find anything. Trust me.

Google seems to think that you're crazy for looking up information on Gewhitt. So much so, that it just directs you to everything Hewitt, Texas.

Gewhitt, and Hewitt are not the same.

Gewhitt existed just south of Stinnett in the Texas panhandle. It began it's rise in the early days of the oilfield boom.

A Whittenburg, An Oil Boom, And Gewhitt, Texas

According to the incredibly tiny amount of information available, the town Gewhitt was named after George Whittenburg, who was the son of James A. Whittenburg. It was located five miles south of Stinnett.

Most of us are aware of the phrase "oil boom." The panhandle oilfield would aid Gewhitt's growth, eventually leading to a post office starting operation around 1927. There was even a grade school that existed in Gewhitt for some time.

I think it's somewhat fair to say that times were pretty decent.

That was until 1942. While WWII was playing out, the post office that had been in operation inside Gewhitt's general store was closed. Mail was then routed through Stinnett.

The Decline Of A Town You Can't Even Google Search For Now

From the few sources where you can actually find info about Gewhitt, this is pretty much the end of the tale for the small town. According to the available info, Gewhitt held on with a population hovering around 60 during the 1940s.

After that, sources all say simply that the population declined. Some say that they "declined," which I take to mean that the community eventually decided to not have their numbers counted or estimated.

Now, good luck to any trying to find any info on Gewhitt. Another Texas oilfield town that just...ceased to exist.
