The summer months can be dangerous thanks to the high temperatures. We are constantly reminded to be safe and take care of ourselves during the hottest months of the year.
Luckily, there are steps you can take to protect yourself and still have a good time outdoors in Amarillo. Here are a few tips to keep in mind.
Stay Hydrated During Amarillo's Brutal Summer Weather
The National Weather Service in Amarillo has hinted that we could possibly see the first day of triple-digit temps for the summer this upcoming weekend. It's going to be important to take care of yourself.
The first thing everyone recommends you do is stay hydrated. Drink lots of water if you're going to be in the heat. This is one of the easiest things you can do.

If you have to spend time outside, take breaks in the shade to cool off. Wear loose-fitting clothes. Skinny jeans aren't any fun when it's over 100 degrees outside.
If you can, just stay inside and get real familiar with your fan or air conditioner.
Plan Ahead If You Plan To Visit The Canyon During The Heat
Every year, we hear reports of people having to be rescued from the canyon due to heat-related illness. Plan ahead so you don't need to be rescued this year.
Take plenty of water with you. The recommendation is 32oz of water an hour per person. If you take your pet, take along some water for them too.
Wear sunscreen and dress appropriately for the trip. Also, take a map and stick to the trails. If something does happen, you want to be easy to find.

Caprock Canyon State Park and Palo Duro Canyon State Park are both great places to spend a weekend in the summer. Just be smart about it. If you're heading out to the lake, make sure you take plenty of sunscreen and water to keep you hydrated.
