Palo Duro Canyon Trails Open, But Heat Could Be Hazardous
We've been somewhat fortunate so far this summer in Amarillo. We haven't seen triple-digit temperatures yet, even though we've gotten somewhat close. It honestly hasn't been that bad yet.
That could all change this weekend. While we may not hit 100 degrees or more, it's still going to be hot. It could be hot enough to impact any plans you've made for the weekend.
Trail Closures and What’s Still Open
Palo Duro Canyon recently gave a trail update, and all trails are open except the Paseo del Rio and the Cottonwood. This is great news if you were hoping to spend time in the canyon this weekend.

The bad news is that the weather might not play nice. The National Weather Service posted on social media today that the highs in the canyon this weekend could reach 103 degrees.
Heat Warning from the National Weather Service
If you have plans to be outdoors, be safe about it this weekend. Stay hydrated, spend time in the shade, and wear sunscreen. That goes double if you are heading to the canyon.
The last thing you want is to go out for a fun weekend and wind up getting sick from being out in the heat unprepared.
Tips for Staying Safe in the Heat
Take a lot of water with you, and go early. Trust me. You don't want to be hiking in the heat of the day. It can get miserable down there. The best times are early morning or in the evening.

If you take a pet along with you, take a lot of water for them too. You might also want to invest in something to help protect their feet against the hot ground.
Summers in Amarillo can be a lot of fun. Just be careful out there, as it looks like things are going to continue to warm up.
