It seems that when a construction project in Amarillo starts, we can expect to see those orange cones for a long time. Of course, all that work takes time and then throwing in weather issues it can prolong the project.

One project that has been going on for a minute is the construction on I-40 between Georgia and Washington Street. There would always be congestion as lanes were closed. There was an on-ramp from Georgia Street that has been closed forever.

We got used to skipping that ramp and passing the construction at the Crockett underpass to enter I-40, and knowing that we will enter at an area that just saw a lane closure, so we will be entering into a lot of backed-up traffic.

The past few days, we got used to hearing the news about the traffic on I-40 East being backed up even more. A lot of us got creative trying to find alternate routes to keep us off of I-40. The construction brought traffic to a stop for a lot of people with lane closures.

Two Days of Headaches For This Construction Good News in Amarillo

The past two days had caused me a lot of headaches, but imagine the surprise when, on Thursday evening, everything seemed to just open up. All of the orange cones were gone.

The City of Amarillo sure knows how to make me feel special on the eve eve of my birthday. Construction between Washington and Georgia eastbound and westbound is finally finished after several years. Thank you City of Amarillo. - Gabriel

Even more miraculously was the fact that the on-ramp at Georgia Street going I-40 East was open. It has been over a year since you had to skip that entrance. Even though it had been so long, Google Maps still hadn't accounted for that in its directions.

Luckily, though now that headache is gone. The traffic is flowing normally. The entrances and exits are all open between Georgia and Washington Street. Life is good.

Now, just please get the underpass at Crockett opened again. That is a much bigger project. Living near the area, I know that I will rejoice when that traffic can flow again, too.
