Austin-based singer-songwriter Emily Herring is premiering the title track from her new album Gliding exclusively for readers of The Boot. Readers can press play below to listen.

Herring describes her album, produced by instrumentalist Steve Fishell, in the context of gliding through the air — literally: “Gliding's a movement with a certain stillness attached,” Herring says. “You're at the mercy of the wind along with the extreme force of gravity."

"The title track leads you off the ledge and into a moment where time stands still," she continues, "your thoughts slowly moving through what could have been with only the implication of the inevitable.”

For fans unfamiliar with Herring, here's a quick primer: The artist spends her days as an auto mechanic and her nights writing and singing pure country tunes in the honky-tonks of Texas. Gliding will be her fourth studio album; on the project, Herring shows that she’s honed her blend of Western swing, Americana, “gypsy jazz” and classic hard country influences into something that is equal parts unique and reverent of the past.

“I found an immediate connection with Emily,” says producer Fishell. “Her voice rings like Rosie Flores did in the 1980s when I played with her during the Los Angeles cowpunk movement. She has that energy and fire.”

Gliding is set for release on Oct. 13 on Austin’s Eight 30 Records. Visit EmilyHerring.net to learn more about Herring, her new album and her upcoming tour dates.
