The National Work Zone Safety Awareness Week, TxDOT is educating drivers how to drive through these work zones and be safe. It isn't just for helping highway workers, but it's also for those behind the wheel.

Texas last year had over 16,000 crashes in work zones across the state. There were 134 fatalities inside work zones, but four of those deaths were right here in the Amarillo area.

The City of Amarillo's recent cell phone ordinance wanted to help eliminate distracted driving in the future work zones. TxDOT has had reported that four out of the five deaths in work zones nationwide are motorist, not the workers.

TxDOT this year will place rumble strips before the work zones to help better alert drivers to changing conditions on the road.
