Two Amarillo Police Officers have been cleared of wrongdoing in the shooting death of a suspect.

The officers were responding to a trespassing call related to a domestic dispute in June at the Nelson Street Apartments in east Amarillo.  When they arrived they were attacked by Jason Herrera, 35.  Investigators say Herrera slammed one of the officers to the ground.  They tried to tase Herrera but he eventually broke free and pulled out a handgun.  That’s when one of the officers fatally shot Herrera.

The 47th district attorney has announced a Potter County grand jury found officers Bryan Gaitan and Shane Wheeler acted in self-defense and will not face any charges.
