Over the weekend the Amarillo Police Department had to respond to a call they never want to happen.

On Saturday the APD received a call of an accidental shooting, when they arrived to the residence they found a 6 year old boy with a gunshot wound to his abdomen.

The APD said the homeowner claimed his gun was "hidden" in the house, the boy found the gun and accidentally shot himself.

The boy was transported to a local hospital, he was then transferred to by helicopter to a Lubbock hospital for medical treatment. The status of the child as of right now is he is in stable condition.

The APD sends a message to gun-owners with young children in the house:

"This incident should remind parents and caregivers to be vigilant in securing firearms that are within reach of children. Extra precaution should be taken to keep any firearm out of a child’s hand. Children are naturally curious and adventurous, simply hiding or placing a weapon high on a shelf will not always offer the security that gun locks or a gun safe offer."
