The offices of the City Of Amarillo will be closed Monday, Jan. 21 in recognition of MLK Day – the holiday honoring the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

If you ride the bus, Amarillo City Transit (ACT) will operate on a Saturday schedule on Monday. For more information call the ACT offices at (806) 378-3095.

For those of us learning  what to do with our trash, Amarillo residents who receive trash pick-up on Mondays will receive service on Tuesday, Jan. 22. Residents who receive trash pick-up on Tuesdays will receive service on Wednesday.

We can expect most schools to take the day off along with federal offices and banks. Mail delivery will resume Tuesday morning,

The Amarillo Branch of the NAACP’s annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration will begin at 10:00 a.m., on Monday,

The public is invited to gather at the MLK Park located at 1501 West Amarillo Boulevard. At 11:30 a.m. a march to the Potter County Courthouse will take place, followed by a program at noon.

The keynote speaker for the event is Reverend Nell Newton, speeches by Amy Taylor and Melodie Graves, along with a musical performance by Devlon Jones.

There will also be an induction of incoming NAACP officers and Committees by the Potter County Commissioner Mercy Murguia.

The closing remarks will be made by Amarillo Branch NAACP’s President, Floyd Anthony.
