Finding An Apartment in Amarillo is Tough Right Now
There seems to be shortages with everything these days, Remember when it was toilet paper? Then everyone wanted to go into canning and mason jars fell in short supply. Well. it seems the shortages are coming right to where it hits us the most. Where we live or want to live.
The Amarillo apartment market is hot right now. like scorching hot. I'll admit when I first moved here it was during December a month that isn't really when most folks are moving around and when you factor in the pandemic and no one wanting to move anywhere, it made finding a place easy. Fast forward a few months and I'm not happy with my apartment, Like many other apartment dwellers who are in this boat, the first instinct is move. To my surprise looking around there are now waitlists that are 30 to 60 days out on just about every property here in Bomb City. and according to most complexes, they are sitting at or nearly full with the average occupancy sitting at 98%
A victim of our own success
Much of the reason we're full is Amarillo is inexpensive to live in compared to Dallas, San Antonio or Austin. I can speak from personal experience because the rent I pay for my 1 Bedroom 1 bath at $670 would easily be twice that in Austin or more depending on what part of town I was in. We opened our schools up earlier and businesses weren't as impacted here as they were in other parts of the nation which is attractive for folks living on the west coast looking to get out of the insanity they have there. The weather is better than many places and land is plentiful here and there are plenty of jobs with more coming on line in the next few months. Yeah, as much as we may knock Amarillo, comparatively speaking, it's the bargain basement, goodwill thrift store deal most folks are looking for in a place to call home.
Speaking of Homes
The other reason for the shortage is our housing market is just as hot. The MLS listings for Amarillo are low, just under 300. which for a city our size and to keep with demand should be closer to 2000 properties at any moment. Low interest rates and Low prices compared to other parts of the state add to the same reasons apartments are going fast makes this the perfect storm for those looking to find living space.
Most real estate experts believe that the shortages should start to loosen up in the fall when business begins to slow down. Have you had a nightmare finding a place? let us know on our app!
