Nearly 1,100 piglets were killed and another 1,100 recovered after a semitrailer crashed on a highway in Xenia, Ohio on Monday night.

Route 35, where the accident occurred, was closed for eight hours due to the crash. The truck was hauling the animals to Indiana, although it's unclear why.

The pigs who were recovered were taken to a local fairgrounds. Several of them ran off into the woods, prompting one fire official to say, "Probably we’ll never get a hold of them…We’ll try as hard as we can, but we probably won’t retrieve them all. I can’t say what will happen to the pigs."

One person who was in the truck was hurt.
