Watch A Rare Drone’s-Eye-View Of This Iconic Amarillo Landmark
The Herring Hotel in Amarillo, Texas is a landmark with a long history. Because it has been empty for so long, there are tons of rumors about it being haunted. Not too long ago everyone was excited at the news that there were plans to restore the hotel. Then, more recently, the future of the Herring Hotel became shrouded in doubt as we learned of some unfortunate circumstances involving the company heading up the project. A recent video on YouTube made of drone footage gives us a unique glance at this landmark.
The Herring Hotel - 100 Years Of Amarillo History
The Herring Hotel was built in the 1920s. There were a lot of buildings that went up around that time thanks to the oil boom. In three years, it will celebrate a century spent as part of downtown Amarillo. It closed in the late '60s, and in the '70s it was turned into office spaces for the government, in 1978 it was left empty. It's been empty, pretty much, ever since.
A couple of years ago, there was news that efforts were underway to restore the hotel to its former glory. It was an exciting time for the Herring Hotel and for those who hated seeing the building sit abandoned.
The Recent Struggles Of The Herring Hotel - An Amarillo Landmark
Last month, news came out that the future of the hotel was a lot less certain than it once was. Reports stated that the Herring Hotel Development Company was filing for bankruptcy. Definitely not the kind of news you want to hear.
The last bit of news we saw regarding the hotel simply stated that it was possible the building would simply go to the highest bidder. What happens after that is anyone's guess.
The footage above gives a unique glimpse at this Amarillo landmark. You get to see it from every angle, even flying over the roof. That's not a view you'd ever get otherwise. It's worth a watch. It gives you a good idea of the sheer size of the hotel.
Hopefully, the story of the Herring Hotel has a happy ending. I know several people who are keeping their fingers crossed.
