Scammers are working overtime in Amarillo, Texas. Every single week, it seems, we get an update on a new scam in the area and they're getting pretty creative. Gone are the days of our biggest worry being getting an annoying phone call from some guy with a bad accent pretending to be from the IRS. Now, they're pretending to be law enforcement and have recently stepped up their game.
Watch Out For Latest Scam Involving Text Messages And Pictures Of Warrants
The Potter County Sheriff's Office recently put out information regarding a new scam they've been made aware of. This one is a spin-off of the one where someone calls you claiming there's a warrant out for your arrest. Now, it seems like they're attaching "proof".
According to the info that was shared by the Sheriff's Office, the scammers are now starting out with a phone call. They follow up the phone call with a text message, and in that message is a photo. The photo is of a "very legitimate looking arrest warrant". The scammers are stepping up their game.
How To Protect Yourself From The Latest Scam Hitting Amarillo
Even though the warrant looks legit, the Sheriff's Office reminds us it is a scam. They aren't going to be sending you text messages with photos of warrants attached. They also won't demand you give them money or Bitcoin over the phone. The best thing to do is hang up.
If you ever receive a text message, an email, or a phone call claiming to be from the Sheriff's Office and suspect it could be a scam, hang up and call the Sheriff's Office yourself. They'll be able to tell you if what you were told is legit or if you were getting scammed.
