Sometimes you hear an awful lot about a restaurant in Amarillo. That kind of word of mouth makes you realize you really need to try the place for yourself. When I start hearing how great a place is, I instinctively check out their social media.

That is the way I check out what they offer and hope for some sneak peek of the food that I have in my future. One place that I have heard a lot about is North Heights Discount & Cafe. They are located at 1621 NW 18th Ave.

While checking out their Facebook page, I saw some of the most delicious-looking catfish I've ever seen. Ooh, I love me some catfish. They also served some great-looking ribs. I'll be honest, everything I saw on their page looked amazing.

They went from being a highly talked-about restaurant in Amarillo to an updated featured image that got even more people talking. They updated the photo to say "permanently closed". Even their Facebook Intro was updated recently to say the same.

Social Media Silence: The Clues Leading to the Closure

When I mentioned that to my coworkers, the reaction was what I expected, disbelief. I went to look at their social media and noticed something. There had not been a post on their page since the last day of February.

The Promise of a Break: What Happened in February?

Even a few days before that, they let us know that they were taking a break:

We have decided to take a much needed break during the month of march. Before we press pause we love to see you all one more time for the last week of February. This wasn't an easy decision but a necessary one. We will use this time to rest and regroup then come back stronger and better for our community. While we dont have an exact reopen date yet we will return ASAP and will be keeping you all up to date as plans are finalized. Thank you all for your continued love, loyalty and support we look forward to welcoming you all back soon!

"Worse Than a Breakup": The Community Responds

The response to their closing on social media was one of sadness and disbelief.

NOOOOOO; they had the best chicken and waffles - Misty

WHYY this is worse than a breakup - Karaya

Great food, I’d gone more if I still lived in Amarillo - Kenneth

Their Google listing was changed to 'temporarily closed' and it still sits that way now, even though we know that is not true. It's a shame that they have closed for good. It's one of those places I wanted to try. Now, with the recent news, I will never have that chance.
