In Amarillo, high school football is life. Stadiums are packed every Friday night, students mingling with each other and cheering their classmates. Alumni and parents of kiddos at the school are screaming at the top of their lungs.

It's serious business here, and we like to stay very dialed in to what is going on with the programs. Each season, there is some kind of drama that will pop up, and it seems we've found a bit of that drama at the midway point of the season.

Canyon High School Football Coach Fired

Todd Winfrey had been a mainstay for the Eagles football program for a long time. He had been with Canyon ISD for 25 years in various capacities, but he has been let go from his post as the head football coach at Canyon High School.

In light of this development, Matt Lovorn, who is the Associate Head Coach and Offensive Coordinator for the Eagles, will take over as the acting head coach for the remainder of the season.

What Happened With Winfrey

According to a CISD release, they said, "an ongoing personnel matter has prompted the change". They gave no other info on the matter. In the Facebook post above, though, there are a couple of things being brought up by commenters.

One of them seems like it may be a bit unfounded, so I won't delve into that one, considering it seems it's based on rumors. The other involves a TikTok posted by Winfrey that was posted to the school account instead of his personal account that involved some strong language, and it seems that may be the issue at hand.

It was a dub-over with Winfrey lying in a pool that said, "I do not give a f*** what others think of me. I'm going to make it, and that's a f***ing promise." Many believe that is the straw that broke the camel's back, but again, no confirmation has been given by the district.
