Here we go again. A new year is fast approaching and, with it, comes a slew of new laws for Texas residents to abide by. Or at least be aware of ...

The new laws really run the gamut affecting everything from business taxes, to how app stores operate. On the tech side AI gets a look while squatters get the bums rush sooner and there's a new partnership between ICE and local law enforcement coming.

Among other laws going into effect January 1st, 2026, Texans should be aware of these new requirements, policies, taxes, etc ...

Senate Bill 8 requires sheriffs in Texas, (all of them), to work with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to find illegal aliens in local jail and serve them with federal warrants.

No App Downloads For Minors

The App Store Accountability Act requires age verification from all users and stops downloads and in-app purchases made without parental consent established through a "connected account that has been verified". (fox7austin)

House Bill 149

It defines AI broadly, restricts the misuse of biometric data, and requires government agencies to disclose when consumers interact with AI systems. The law prohibits AI designed to incite self-harm, crime, unlawful discrimination, social scoring by government, or the creation/distribution of certain harmful or sexually exploitative content. - fox7austin

The law also creates a statewide AI regulatory sandbox for controlled testing and the Texas Artificial Intelligence Council to advise on AI policy and ethical considerations - fox7austin

Senate Bill 38

This one is aimed at "squatters", making it easier and quicker for landlords and/or  property owners to give those not paying rent the boot. It also gives renters less time to answer eviction notices. See a full list of regular session bills here and the list of special session bills here.
