Meghan Linsey has opened up about a sexual assault that took place in 2010, at the beginning of her career with Steel Magnolia. After years of being told to stay silent, Linsey says that she was moved to reveal her experience in response to the lewd comments made by Donald Trump in a leaked audio recording from 2005.

Without naming names, the The Voice runner-up recalls the assault, which happened on a tour bus in front of "a lot of important people," in a post on her private Facebook page, which has since been reprinted on Yahoo. The man in question grabbed up her skirt, groped Linsey and tried to pick her up by her behind.

"I was mortified and told him not to touch me and to put me down. It caused quite a scene, and I could tell that he was embarrassed and angry," the singer writes. "The next night, he came up behind me and whispered in my ear; he said, 'I have boats bigger than you could ever imagine, and I could put you in the middle of the ocean where no one would ever hear from you again. Just remember that.' He laughed and walked away."

After the man's actions and comments, Linsey says that she had chills running through her and knew that she needed to tell someone. But when she called her manager and the head of her label (she and Steel Magnolia duo partner Joshua Scott Jones were signed to Big Machine Records at the time), they both told her the same thing: "They both said if I wanted to have a career in country music then I could never say anything about it out loud, to anyone," Linsey recalls.

"Men have done far worse things to me in the past, but this was the first time I was told I couldn’t say anything because of how it would affect my career," she adds. "Because of how powerful he was, he could do anything he wanted to me. If I wanted to have a singing career, then I had to let him grab me wherever he wanted, and he was allowed to threaten me. It was only I who had consequences to pay if I didn’t comply."

In her post, Linsey says that she was compelled to finally break her silence after presidential nominee Trump responded to his leaked tapes by dismissing his comments as "locker room talk."

"THIS is why Donald Trump’s comments are so upsetting," she writes. "This is why it’s not just ‘locker room talk.’ Because at the end of the day, it’s NOT just talk. This is rape culture, where powerful men sexually assault women and get away with it because of 'who they are.'"

Linsey goes on to admit that she had already planned not to vote for Trump in the 2016 election, but his comments on the audio made her decision much more personal.
