For so many, trucking isn't just a career — it's a lifestyle. And Jjust like those with any specific lifestyle, truckers can fall into less-than-stellar habits, from eating poorly to neglecting truck maintenance. With so many people making New Year's resolutions, now's a great time for truckers to get back on track, too.

Here are our top suggestions for truckers to turn over new leaves in 2024:

1) Drink more water. Sure, maybe you need to eat healthier, too, but this is a really simple goal that can lay the groundwork for other healthier options. Most people are familiar with the rule of thumb stating we all should drink six to eight 8-ounces glasses of fluids per day, but it can be a little more complicated than that. Whatever your personal needs, you probably can stand to skip sugary or caffeinated drinks in favor of plain water.

2) Move your body more — even when you're on the road. Take a few minutes to see what might work best for you: parking farther from the door at truck stops and doing a few laps around your truck every time you stop, finding a video on stretches or exercises you can do in a manageable time period, or stashing dumbells in your cab. Set a goal that you can incorporate into your average day and stick with it.

3) Stay connected. When life gets busy, it's easy to put off sending a text or calling an old friend or special family member ... and before long, six months or a year has gone by. Make the road seem a little less lonely by building time into every day to connect or reconnect with both friends and family.

4) Exercise your mind. Look for audiobooks or podcasts that might interest you. If you don't know where you start, ask family or friends for recommendations. If you think you'd enjoy trucking podcasts, FeedSpot has a list of 100.
