Earlier today, a friend of mine asked me if I had heard about WT and the petition to save WT Cheer. I asked for a link, and then my jaw hit the floor.

It's not because I'm a big fan of the art of cheer, or that I have any vested interest in cheer. It's because of the number of signatures the petition has gathered in less than one day.

The petition has a goal of 5,000 signatures. As of this very moment, as I'm writing this, there are almost 4,500 signatures. At the bottom of the petition, it states that it was started 12 hours ago.

That's some pretty quick work.

Online petitions are nothing new. Change.org has a petition going for almost any cause that you can think of. Most of them never reach their goal, which is why I was so shocked to see this one done with a lot of time to spare.

While I can't in good faith agree or disagree with any of the claims made in the petition as to why the cheer squad will be replaced with a dance squad, I can respect the passion of those who created the petition. I respect it enough to say, "Let them cheer."

Being a part of cheer is tough. A friend of mine is married to the head of a cheer department of a Big 12 team. One thing you don't do, is joke with her about cheer.

It's as every bit athletic as anything else that is happening on the field. It takes skill, practice, and you have to be in great shape to do it.

If you would like to take a look at the petition, here's a link to it.
