We want you to have a happy and safe Halloween!

I'm sure growing up, your mom told you things like, "Better safe than sorry," or "Safety first." You probably just rolled your eyes and went on with whatever you were doing... but if you have kids of your own, those sayings probably make a lot more sense. While it is true that Amarillo is a relatively safe place to live, you can never be too safe these days.

Here are some simple tips to help you and your trick-or-treaters stay safe.

  • Plan your trip

You can make a route using Google or Bing maps to plan out your safest route. Make a printable copy and leave a copy with someone you so they know where you are at.

  • Saftey in numbers

Get some of the neighborhood kids or some of your child's school friends and go out as a big group.

  • Check your costumes

Make sure costumes are not a tripping or suffocating hazard.

  • Light it up

Make sure each child has a flashlight. Think about adding reflective tape to parts of the costumes or getting glow sticks to wear.

  • Bring drinks

Bringing water or Gatorade will keep your kids happy and hydrated during their long walk.

  • Take a second look

Check and double check your kids' candy.
