Summer in West Texas is all about family road trips. Whether you go west to New Mexico to see the Capulin Volcano National Monument, or to the Colorado Mountains there is always plenty to see and do that is relatively close by.

How about a road to Marathon Texas? Just south of Midland-Odessa this small town is the home of the beautiful Gage gardens, the Chicken House Museum and Target. But how does a town with only 430 people have a Target? Well, it’s not a typical Target. It’s the world’s smallest Target, so small there isn’t even a Starbucks.  As the saying goes, this Target proves everything isn’t always bigger in Texas.

In 2016, someone painted a bullseye and the word Target on the side of a former railroad structure. The City of Marathon considered it to be an art installation, and allowed it stay up.  It’s still a mystery as to who is behind the inception to this homage to Target Superstores, as no artist has come forward to claim this project, and there’s no telling how long it will last.

Target Corporate knows about this tiny Target and fully supports Marathon to keep it up.  Incidentally, it appears as though the closest legitimate Target to Marathon is in Odessa, Texas, which is more than a two hour long drive one-way, but there are plenty of other things to do in this part of the state that are more exciting than a visit to Target.  Visit the City of Marathon’s Facebook to see more attractions.
