Texas Might Reconsider Imprisoning Prostitutes [POLL]
Texas is reconsidering the imprisonment of prostitutes. Currently, if a prostitute is charged with 3 counts of prostitution, they are charged with a felony.
Right now there are more than 350 inmates in prison on prostitution charges. There are state officials who are wondering if this is a gross waste of prison space and resources.
"It's nuts that we've got this many prostitutes in prison, people that we're not afraid of, but we're just mad at," state Sen. John Whitmire, D-Houston said.
According to sources, it costs between $15,500 and $18,538 per year to house an inmate in a Texas prison. On the other hand, it costs only about $4,300 for a community rehabilitation center for a year.
