The City of Amarillo released information on its ongoing monitoring of the worldwide coronavirus outbreak today. Amarillo city officials are warning people to take precautions to protect against the recent outbreak of the novel coronavirus or Covid-19 in the United States.

Although no cases have been reported in Amarillo, 60 cases of the virus have been confirmed across the United States, here is what the city released today:

The City of Amarillo Department of Public Health is monitoring the 2019 novel coronavirus, which was discovered in China in Dec. 2019. As of today (Feb. 28), there have been no cases of coronavirus reported in the Amarillo area and no confirmed cases of anyone contracting the virus within the state of Texas.

“There are precautions that individuals can take that can make a difference in preventing coronavirus, as there are with most infections,” said Dr. Scott Milton, Public Health Authority/Associate Professor at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in Amarillo. “The precautions are similar to flu prevention precautions – wash your hands, cover your mouth when you cough, sneeze, etc.”
