Harwell Middle School was holding basketball tryouts on an outdoor court take a turn for the worse when two students were rushed to a hospital with bullet wounds.

While middle school students and coaches were holding basketball tryouts on an outdoor court in Edinburg, Texas on Monday two students were shot, authorities believe hunters on near by farmland might be to blame.

The shooting happened after school hours around 5:00 pm, although after school activities were in session including a concert and a faculty meeting. The school was immediately placed on lock down.

One boy was shot during a layup and the other was shot while waiting for his turn. Authorities do not believe the boys were targeted, or it was gang related even though one student said gang activity is a problem at the school and is worried about his safety. Authorities do believe it could have been some hunters on a nearby farmland. After interviewing some land owners in the area saying the land was leased to deer hunters. The School opened just over a year ago north of Edinburg. One boy is in Critical Condition when a bullet struck and organ, and one in Stable Condition.
