It's been a hot summer here in the Texas Panhandle. To add to those woes we haven't seen much rain. We have been hit or miss for some time. We are mainly missing a good old fashion downpour.

It would be nice. I mean that would help our water supply and would also cool down our temperatures just a bit. It just hasn't happened. Oh, and since it hasn't we have run across a problem.

We have found ourselves in a drought. Since that is the case the City of Amarillo has come to us asking for help. There was a Drought Contingency Plan put into play back in 2019.

Since a lot of our water supply is used to try to keep our lawns green that is where they are starting. They are asking us to voluntarily go by this schedule to water our lawns. They also want to make sure we are not watering them every day.

According to the City of Amarillo:

Stage 1 of the Drought Contingency Plan includes voluntary outdoor watering based on odd and even-numbered addresses. Odd-numbered addresses may water on Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. Even-numbered addresses may water on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Residents are asked not to water on Saturdays. Residents are asked to water lawns between the hours of 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. and to water lawns no more than three times a week to conserve water.

To be fair I don't mind following this. I will do my part. Heck, I will even do one better. I haven't really watered my lawn much this summer at all. It looks horrible. It's all dead but hey, I haven't had to mow but once. So I take that as a win anyway.

What I hate though is seeing the businesses that are wasting water. There are a ton that are not only overwatering but also have busted sprinklers that just gush out water or flood the streets.

We come across that a lot here in Amarillo. I say we will all help out and limit our water if these businesses go ahead and fix their problems too. Oh and remember to not water in the heat of the day as well, that is just a money waste.
