The Curious Detail About This Amarillo Bank That’s Leaving Everyone Puzzled
The one thing about Amarillo is that we have a church and convenience store on just about every corner, but we also have banks that seem to be on every corner. If you still frequent banks to make your deposits and not do everything online, then you might have noticed this strange thing at a local Amarillo Bank.
Amarillo National Bank, founded in 1892, is the oldest bank in Amarillo. It has been serving the banking needs of Amarillo for nearly 132 years.
ANB has banks all over Amarillo and Texas, and if you have ever used their drive-ups, then you might have noticed something quirky.
If you look up at the drive-up lanes, you might notice that a few of them are named "Tol". I've been in the car with several people at an ANB drive-up when they asked,
What the heck does Tol mean?
For those unfamiliar with the history of Amarillo National Bank, Tol may seem like a fancy banking term, but that is not the case.
The term "Tol" is meant to be a way to honor a person.
The Tol Lane at the ANB Drive Up is a Play on the Word Tall
ANB named their tall vehicle lanes Tol to honor B.T. "Tol" Ware II. Tol Ware II was an integral part of Amarillo National Bank's efforts to open up the first drive-up bank in Texas. Tol Ware II became the president of ANB in 1973. Tol Ware II passed away in 2014 at the age of 95. The "Tol" serves as a reminder of all the great things he did with ANB.
