Department Store Making Triumphant Return to Amarillo, Settling in Exciting New Location
Amarillo has had excellent department stores over the year, however as the years progress a lot of those stores go away.
Let's look at some of those stores. Mervyn's was a great department store, and it was located on the west side of Westgate Mall and it closed back in 2009. Sears closed in 2019 and was located on the east side of Westgate Mall. Steinmart was another excellent department store, located at 34th and Bell in the Village Shopping Center and it closed in 2020. Montgomery Ward, Woolworths, Levine's, and Blackburn's were department stores of years past, and the list goes on.
Another department store began its departure in Amarillo in 2019, and the plans were for the stores to turn into Gordman's, but that never happened and all 3 Beall's stores in Amarillo closed, and nothing returned. The location in the mall is now Urban Air Adventure Park, the location that was at 45th and Teckla, will become the new home of Harvest Connexion church, and the one that was located at Grand and 1-40 is now a Ross Dress for Less.
According to paperwork filed with state agencies, the renovation start date will be January 2024 with a competition date of March 2024.
That's right! Bealls will be moving back to Amarillo and will be calling Puckett Plaza home, so the store will be located at 3440 Bell St.
According to CSA, the Florida base store is also the owner of Burke's Outlet. They are merging all the Burke's Outlets and Bealls Outlets into "bealls". Hereford and Pampa currently have a Burke's Outlet and Borger has a Burke's and a Beall's Outlet.
The company is dropping the word outlet.
Update: We heard back from Karen O’Neil, Director of Communications of Bealls Inc.
Bealls Inc bought the rights to the Bealls name when Stage Stores filed for bankruptcy. We continue to grow in Texas and across the country and have decided the time is right to unify our brand under the bealls name. So while the new store in Amarillo will bring bealls back, it will be as Bealls Inc. I checked with our real estate department and learned the new store in the Puckett Plaza Shopping Center is scheduled to begin our construction January 2024 and open in late March 2024.
Here's a fact to note, this new Bealls store is not associated with the former Stage Stores. Bealls Inc. bought the naming rights after Stage filed for bankruptcy.
The new bealls (yes, it will be all lowercase) will be a nice addition. Get ready Amarillo this beloved store is coming back for your shopping needs.
