Carroll Shelby designed the Ferrari crushing 427 Cobra Mustang died today at the age of 89.

Shelby may have been most well known for his line of Cobra Mustangs that truly blew consumers away, but he was also a very accomplished racer in the 1950's. A bad heart forced Shelby to retire from racing in the 1960's and from there he began designing these classic auto heart throbs.

"We are all deeply saddened, and feel a tremendous sense of loss for Carroll's family, ourselves and the entire automotive industry," said Joe Conway, president of Shelby International. "There has been no one like Carroll Shelby and never will be. However, we promised Carroll we would carry on, and he put the team, the products and the vision in place to do just that."
