Chris Stapleton’s ‘Starting Over’ Is a Simple and Sweet Acoustic Love Song
With just a few acoustic guitar chords and a percussive shaker, Chris Stapleton revealed a new song called "Starting Over" on Thursday (Aug. 27). The first listen of what's coming from an upcoming album is a soft love song.
The "Broken Halos" hitmaker wrote "Starting Over" with Mike Henderson, one of the founding members of the SteelDrivers. It's a familiar beat for those who had the chance to see him live last fall. Stapleton made the song part of his setlist on several occasions, revealing a more sensitive approach to vocalizing, but the same strength of storytelling. The lyrics tell of a man urging for his lover to come with him, for they have nothing left to lose.
"And It don’t matter to me / Wherever we are is where I wanna be / Any honey for once in our lives / Let’s take our chances and roll the dice / I can be your lucky penny / You can be my four-leaf clover / Starting over," Stapleton sings on the title-track of his new album, due Nov. 13.
5 Burning Questions About Chris Stapleton's New Music and the Cryptic Video:
On Monday, Stapleton shared the first tease of new music, offering fans on social media a cryptic video that featured a dramatic, orchestra-rock song and a thick chorus of gospel vocalists. The words "Starting Over" went up in his profile image on Twitter and Instagram, leading fans to believe an album of that name would be released on Nov. 13. However, it's not certain that is his next studio album's name. The project will be his fourth, and first since the double volumed From A Studio releases of 2017. Like his first three albums, this new song was co-produced by Stapleton and Dave Cobb.
As a radio single, "Starting Over" is Stapleton's first since 2018, when "Millionaire" reached the Top 5 on Billboard Country Airplay charts. To date he's released just seven radio singles, including the chart-topping "Broken Halos." His most famous song is a cover of "Tennessee Whiskey" that was never released to country radio as a single, but has gained significant airplay in the years since, charting as recently as 2019.

Chris Stapleton, "Starting Over" Lyrics
Well the road out like a welcome mat / To a better place than the one we’re at / I ain’t got no kind of plan / But I’ve had all of this town I can stand / And I got friends out on the coast / We could jump in the water and see what floats / We’ve been saving for a rainy day / Let’s beat the storm and be on our way.
It don’t matter to me / Wherever we are is where I wanna be / Any honey for once in our lives / Let’s take our chances and roll the dice / I can be your lucky penny / You can be my four-leaf clover / Starting over.
This might not an easy time / There’s rivers to cross and hills to climb / And some days we might fall apart / And some nights might feel cold and dark / Nobody wins afraid of losing / And the hard roads are the ones worth choosing / Some day we’ll look back and smile / And know it was worth every mile.
It don’t matter to me / Wherever you are is where I wanna be / Any honey for once in our lives / Let’s take our chances and roll the dice / I can be your lucky penny / You can be my four-leaf clover / Starting over.
