Plot Twist: Cinergy Entertainment Puts Regal Theater Building Back on the Market in Amarillo
There is a building located on I-40 behind Salt Grass, Slim Chickens, and LongHorn Steakhouse, next to the Post Office, surrounded by multiple hotels. It is just sitting there, gathering dust.
The building in question is the old Regal/UA Movie Theater. Regal officially closed the doors on the theater on September 15, 2022. People from all over the Texas Panhandle had enjoyed watching movies in this theater for almost 2 decades. At the time the UA Theater opened it was state-of-the-art technology.
The building has been empty since the doors closed, however, in September 2023 Cinergy Entertainment announced that they had purchased the property in Amarillo, as well as purchasing a Regal property in Midland.
What's Going On with the Building?
As of today, no work has been done to remodel the property, and no information has been shared about Cinergy's plans for the vacant building.
We contacted Cinergy to inquire about the building and its future plans as a former movie theater, but unfortunately, the news was unfavorable.
Cinergy Entertainment Group, Inc. does own the property that was formerly the UA/Regal Star. We continue to evaluate plans for best use of the real estate, which have changed over time. With realization of the high cost of construction, Cinergy paused plans for a re-purposing of the building for use by Cinergy as an entertainment or cinema complex. Our managers at the existing Cinergy location in Amarillo have been approached by a number of people who indicated that they would like to purchase the property, so they arranged for a sign at the property identifying broker information for Cinergy. - Cinergy Entertainment Spokesperson
At present, the property is up for sale again. It's uncertain who or what will purchase the property. There's still hope that it could become a theater once more or may be transformed into something completely different.
Hopefully, we'll get something similar to the Movie Tavern or Alamo Drafthouse if we're lucky.
