The Clements Unit

The Clements Unit opened in Amarillo in 1990.  The prison was named after Texas Governor William P. Clements.   The Clements Unit is located at 9601 Spur 591.  The Clements Unit security levels are G1-G5.  This level of security is the general population for institutional offenders.

In those years, the Clements Unit has seen thousands of inmates pass through its doors, including some who were there when the jail first opened 34 years ago in 1990.

However, as with any prison, it has housed some notable criminals.

Three of these notable criminals are still incarcerated in the Clements Unit with parole eligibility in the far future.

The Clements Unit has been an ACA Accredited Unit Since May 2008.   The head of the Clements Unit is Warden Adam Gonzales.  The Clements Unit is a male prison and can house 2,932 inmates.   The Clements Unit currently has 590 employees.

The prison currently has different programs that the inmates can take part in and work.  They have a Beef Processing Plant, a Unit Garden, and the Texas Second Chance Program.  They also have a shoe factory that makes shoes for the TDCJ prisons.

Inmates incarcerated in the Clements Unit come from all over Texas.
