Drunk Driver Leads Sheriffs on Chase from Carson County to Potter County on New Year’s Day
One person is starting the new year off in jail as a police chase from Carson County, which includes the towns of Panhandle and White Deer, Texad into Amarillo, Texas.
On Monday, January 1, 2024, the Potter County Sheriff's received a request from the Carson County Sheriff's office on a vehicle pursuit. Carson County Sheriff's said a female driver was traveling westbound on I-40 in the wrong lane. The woman refused to stop for the Carson County Sheriff's Deputy trying to initiate a traffic stop.
The Stop Was Finally Made in Potter County
The driver made her way into Potter County and finally stopped near Pullman Road in Amarillo. When the Potter County Sheriff's arrived to assist Carson County Sheriff Deputies, they were informed that the woman had told Carson County deputies that she had been drinking.
Driving While Intoxicated
The woman was transported to the Potter County Detention Center and was administered sobriety tests. The tests determined that she was intoxicated and she was arrested for Driving While Intoxicated. She is awaiting arraignment.
No Injuries reported
Fortunately, no one was injured as this woman traveled I-40. According to the Texas Department of Transportation, in 2022, 1,162 people lost their lives due to drunk driving accidents. That is an average of 3 people lost per day. They are still tabulating the numbers for 2023.
As we enter the early days of 2024, please continue to be safe if you are going to be drinking. Always have a plan, in this day and age, there are so many ways to make it safely home after drinking without getting behind the wheel of a car and driving.
