Federal Case On The Fate Of Abortion Pill Begins In Amarillo

Amarillo has a way of making National news and most of the time, it's usually a negative story. Today eyes from all over the word are seeing Amarillo in a very polarizing court hearing.

We also seem to be the place to host very high-profile court cases. Cullen Davis in the 70s, Oprah in the 90s, and now a case is being heard in Amarillo in the US District Court.

Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk will hear arguments this morning in the Amarillo Federal court over the fate of the abortion pill, mifepristone. The hearing is the first step in overturning federal approval of the FDA-approved drug. This drug has had FDA approval since 2000.

According to the FDA website: Mifeprex (mifepristone) and its generic Mifepristone Tablets, 200 mg (collectively mifepristone) are approved, in a regimen with misoprostol, to end an intrauterine pregnancy through ten weeks gestation (70 days or less since the first day of a patient’s last menstrual period).

According to a press release from the Alliance Defending Freedom, attorneys filed a federal lawsuit on November 18, 2022, on behalf of the Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine, the American Association of Pro-Life Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the American College of Pediatricians, the Christian Medical & Dental Associations, and doctors Shaun Jester, Regina Frost-Clark, Tyler Johnson, and George Delgado.

The lawsuit, claims the FDA did not properly evaluate the safety of the drug before it was approved for use, 23 years ago. The lawsuit also claims that the medication should not have been available through telehealth sessions during the COVID Pandemic.

Lawyers for the Justice Department, the maker of the drug, and a conservative group will begin their arguments today in Amarillo. The fate of the drug will lie in the hands of, Judge Kacsmaryk. The ruling to halt the drug could come today, or weeks from now.

The country now awaits another historic court ruling. This one will come from the center of Amarillo.
