Most people who've lived in Amarillo all their lives or for a long time will probably be decently knowledgeable about where they live, but do they really know everything about it? For those who want to add new wrinkles in their brain, here are some facts you've never known about Amarillo.

1. Indiana and The Last Crusade was filmed In Amarillo

Released on May of 1989, this film centers on the hero Indiana Jones, played by Harrison Ford, as he teams up with his father, Sean Connery, to find the Holy Grail, fighting off Nazis in the progress. While the shooting of the film did take place in various locations, including Spain and England, the last shot of Indy and the gang took place right here in Amarillo as they ride into the sunset.

2."Cops" TV Show Set In Amarillo.

Being one of the longest running shows, airing since 1989 with over 900 episodes, it follows the officers of multiple cities mostly from the USA as they take down baddies and fight crime. Amarillo is one of the 140 cities the show has been set in, with a season planned to only be filmed here and only here. 

3. Oprah Winfrey Came to Amarillo.

Mostly known for her successful talk show "The Oprah Winfrey Show," this famous entrepreneur got into trouble after an episode of her show back in 1996.  About the subject of mad cow disease, she had invited as her guest Howard Lyman, an American farmer and animal welfare activist. During the show she stated along the lines that she couldn't eat another burger after listening to what Lyman said. This resulted in a two month lawsuit against her by Texan cattleman. She won the case, the Amarillo, Texas court finding her not liable for any damages.

4. Amarillo Has Been The Subject Of Well-Known Many Songs

Songs such as "Amarillo by Morning" written by Terry Stafford and Paul Fraser and "Amarillo" by Alan Jackson have become pretty well known around the US, "Amarillo by Morning" being a classic song covered by the likes of George Strait and most recently Clifton Jansky, with the former's version becoming a hit back in 1983. It's considered by many one of the best country songs of all time.

5. Amarillo Provides Most of The World's Helium

Most of the worlds' Helium is concentrated from just 250 miles from Amarillo. After the discovery's 100th anniversary came around in 1968, The Helium Monument was built next to the Don Harrington Discovery Center, which contained at the time four separate time capsules The monument originally included 4 time capsules, but one was opened in 1993 after 25 years and another is planned to be opened in 2968.
